Parolee Randy Alana, who was charged Friday with killing federal death penalty investigator Sandra Coke, has a long criminal history, including a murder charge, a no-contest plea to a jailhouse killing, and convictions for rape and robbery.

August 13, 1983: 23-year-old Marilyn Pigott is killed with a claw hammer inside her North Oakland apartment. Alana is later arrested and charged with the slaying. Alana had known Pigott since elementary school.

June 23, 1984: While awaiting trial for the Pigott slaying at Oakland city jail, Alana and James Benson stab fellow inmate Alfred Ingram more than 80 times with a makeshift knife, killing him, authorities said. Prosecutors said the two men thought Ingram was an informant.

October 30, 1986: In a preliminary hearing for the prison killing, Benson and Alana are said to have put out a $100,000 contract for the assassination of Alameda County Deputy District Attorney Russ Giuntini and a witness.

June 5, 1987: Two weeks after Benson is convicted of first-degree murder, a jury deadlocks on Alana's murder charge, forcing a mistrial.

February 25, 1988: A jury acquits Alana on a murder charge in the killing of Pigott. He is, however, convicted of receiving stolen property, a gun taken from Pigott.

March 22: In a plea deal, Alana pleads guilty to voluntary manslaughter for the Ingram jail killing. As part of the deal, he gets a six-year state prison term.

October 7, 1992: Alana is shot in the head in Oakland, allegedly by a hit man for the Black Guerrilla Family. Russ Giuntini, a former prosecutor who tried cases against Alana, said recently Oakland police thought Alana was dead. "As I recall it, somebody nudged Alana with a foot thinking he was dead," he said. Alana replied: "Oh no I'm not."

Sometime in 1993: Coke and Alana meet and begin dating. Alana has said they met while Coke investigated a capital murder case. It is not clear how long the relationship lasted initially.

December 2, 1997: Alana is arrested on suspicion of robbery.

February 2, 1998: Coke's daughter is born at Alta Bates Hospital in Berkeley. The birth certificate on record does not list a name for the girl, but is signed by Coke. There is no father listed.

November 13, 1998: Alana is sentenced to 15 years in prison for the 1997 robbery. He won't be paroled until June 2012.

June, 2012: Alana is released on parole for the 1997 robbery.

May, 2013: Coke's neighbors report seeing Alana staying at Coke's home and using her car. Jerry Pittman, whose mother lives next door, said one morning Alana was acting "peculiar" and hiding behind cars. "He looked real spacey, " Pittman said. Coke confronted Alana and said, "Face me like a man," according to Pittman.

August 4: Coke was last seen by her 15-year-old daughter about 8:30 p.m. She reportedly left her home at 639 Aileen Street in North Oakland to meet someone who had information about her missing dog. She was last seen with Alana, police say.

August 6: Alana is taken into custody on a parole violation. Initially, he was named a person of interest in the case but not a suspect.

August 9: After a two-day search in Solano County, authorities find a woman's body near Lagoon Valley Park in Vacaville.

August 13: Authorities identify the body as Coke, but do not specify a cause of death.

October 17: While at Santa Rita Jail in Dublin, Alana is arrested on suspicion of murder, vehicle theft and grand theft.

October 18: Alana is formally charged with murder, vehicle theft and grand theft by the Alameda County District Attorney's office.
