LODI -- Five people, including a child and a pregnant woman, were killed in a multicar collision on one of Lodi's main thoroughfares Tuesday afternoon, in one of the worst accidents in the history of the city of more than 60,000.

Around 5:21 p.m., police and paramedics responded to the intersection of Ham Lane and Vine Street where a five-car collision entailed resulted in multiple people being injured.

Lodi police said five were confirmed dead, including a "very young" child, a pregnant woman and her unborn baby. As of Tuesday night, the extent of others' injuries were not immediately available.

The intersection remains closed as crews continue to investigate the scene.

The cause of the collision is under investigation, but according to the Lodi News-Sentinel, several witnesses standing on the lawn of Lodi Middle School, facing Ham Lane, reported seeing a man in a tan SUV speed through the intersection while using a cell phone. That vehicle came to rest in front of the driveway to the school with severe damage to the front end.
