OAKLAND -- A man was arrested Tuesday night on suspicion of shooting his 18-year-old girlfriend in the cheek at a motel not far from Kaiser Permanente Medical Center in Oakland, police said Wednesday.

The suspect, James Scott, 20, refused to talk to investigators about the shooting, police said.

The woman, whose name has not been released, was in stable condition at a hospital and will recover, authorities said. She has not been interviewed yet by investigators, who are trying to determine the motive.

Police said the shooting happened about 7:16 p.m. Tuesday inside a room at the Value Inn, 370 West MacArthur Blvd., at Shafter Avenue.

Police were called after a motel employee heard a gunshot and saw Scott dragging the woman out of their room and down a staircase.

Some police officers happened to be across the street at Mosswood Park investigating another incident and arrested Scott and summoned medical aid for the woman.

Scott and the woman were regular residents of the motel, police said. He was booked on suspicion of assault with a firearm.
