ANTIOCH -- A man out for a late-night walk with his two dogs escaped serious injury as did three of his neighbors after two stray pit bulls bit them Wednesday, police said.
Police shot and killed one of the attacking dogs, and Animal Control captured the other one, Antioch police Lt. John VanderKlugt said. The dogs were either pit bulls or a pit-bull mix, police said.
"We don't know if they have owners," Antioch police Lt. Diane Aguinaga said. "If they do, we're hoping that the owners step forward and take responsibility."
The dogs attacked as the man was walking his two dogs on a trail near the 2700 block of Larkspur Drive, about 8:50 p.m., VanderKlugt said. The man was approaching the street when the pit bulls came upon him, VanderKlugt said.
The pit bulls bit the man and his two dogs, and the skirmish drew the attention of three neighbors who came out of their homes to provide help, VanderKlugt said. They were also bitten, he said.
All four dog-bite victims were treated for wounds, some at the scene, police said, and are expected to recover. The man's two dogs were also OK, police said.
Shawn Fisher, 26, said he, his sister and his father ran out of their home on Larkspur Drive after they heard what sounded like dogs fighting. Fisher was bitten on both arms and jumped on top of a car in his driveway to escape the canines. He answered the door Thursday morning still wearing a bloodied tank top shirt with bandages on his arms.
A trail of blood led from the Fisher home to a home across the street, where the porch was covered in blood.
One of the attacking dogs charged police, and at least one officer fired a shot that killed it, VanderKlugt said. That shot scared off the second dog, but it returned more than an hour later and was captured without incident by Animal Control officers, he said. That dog will be quarantined for 10 days, after which it will be euthanized if an owner hasn't claimed it, Aguinaga said.
