OAKLAND -- A pileup involving an overturned vehicle, a big rig and two other cars blocked two lanes of southbound Interstate 880 Friday, prompting a miles-long traffic backup during the morning commute, the California Highway Patrol said.

CHP officers responded about 7:14 a.m. to the crash scene, which involved at least three cars and a big rig and extended from 23rd Avenue to 29th Avenue, Officer Ron Simmons said. An ambulance arrived on scene about 7:45 a.m., but nobody was taken to the hospital.

Motorists were funneled through the middle two lanes until about 8 a.m., when all lanes reopened to traffic, said Simmons, who added that big rigs will be allowed to use Interstate 580 until noon.
