Details of a fatal accident remained sketchy two days after a car plummeted 200 feet down a cliff at Steep Ravine above Stinson Beach.

The Saturday afternoon calamity killed a motorist, but his identity remained a mystery pending a probe by authorities including the county coroner.

"At this time the investigation into the death is ongoing and the coroner's division will not be providing any further information pertaining to the investigation or the identity of the male subject until he is identified and his next of kin are notified," said Marin sheriff's Lt. Keith Boyd, assistant chief deputy coroner.

Witnesses saw a red Honda Accord in the southbound lane go off the cliff at about 4:26 p.m. south of Rocky Point Road. The CHP closed Highway 1 while a tow truck lifted the car back to the highway.

The single occupant was pronounced dead at the scene.

The California Highway Patrol said the car was reported stolen in Vallejo.
