SUNNYVALE -- A 2-week-old baby has been recovered by Mexican authorities and the father who is accused of abducting him was arrested after the pair were found at a checkpoint across the border from Arizona.

According to Sunnyvale police Capt. Dave Pitts, U.S. Border Patrol agents are waiting to take custody of both Mesut Guler, 22, and infant Henry Guler-Romero at the Arizona border crossing.

"We are told that the baby is fine, and we're waiting for confirmation from the border patrol, but they do not have custody yet," Pitts said at a news briefing shortly after 5 p.m. "Mexican authorities have to do their paperwork before they can return them."

Pitts said border agents told him that could take hours. He added that Arizona Child Protective Services has been notified and will have someone at the crossing to take custody of the infant.

Pitts said the two were together when they were questioned at a checkpoint an unknown distance from the Arizona border. While Guler was being interrogated, authorities contacted border agents in Lukeville, Ariz., who discovered he had a $1 million warrant that Sunnyvale investigators had obtained.

An Amber Alert had been issued for the infant boy Wednesday morning. Guler was said to be fleeing in a tan 2004 GMC Envoy, which was reportedly seen twice Thursday morning in San Diego, according to multiple media reports. Authorities had information from Guler's cellphone indicating he was in the San Diego area early Thursday morning, according to Sunnyvale Capt. Dave Pitts.

Tuesday afternoon, Guler got into an argument with his girlfriend, the baby's mother, and took the infant, according to the Sunnyvale Department of Public Safety. Guler told the baby's mother he was leaving the state with Henry.

Police say Guler has made previous threats to harm himself and Henry.

Guler left the residence around 4 p.m. Sunnyvale police were called to the residence at about 10:30 p.m.
