OAKLAND -- The support for Luke "Sasha" Fleischman continues in a variety of ways.
The Oakland teen was on AC Transit's 57 line coming home from Maybeck High School in Berkeley on Monday night when a 16-year-old Oakland High School student lit the teen's skirt on fire.
Fleischman identifies as agender or "nonbinary" gender and wears a skirt to school most days.
In addition to the more than $21,000 that was raised earlier this week by community members and friends for the teen's medical costs, Oakland High students are on a fundraising drive to support the 18-year-old high school senior. Oakland High students have collected $500 and the Oakland Education Association plans to match whatever amount is raised, a union spokesman said Friday.
Students and teachers will also continue to wear their "NO H8" badges.
The student charged in the attack is Oakland High junior Richard Thomas, and staff there have sent letters to Fleischman's Berkeley school apologizing for the student's crime, and indicating their support for Fleischman.
Fleischman's father, Karl Fleischman teachers kindergarten at Sequoia Elementary School on Lincoln Avenue in Oakland, and starting Friday teachers and students plan to have every bus stop pole on the 57/MacArthur Line streaming with rainbow ribbons, said teachers' union president Trish Gorham.
