EL CERRITO -- A 16-year-old Richmond boy died on the BART tracks in El Cerrito Tuesday morning, authorities said.

The teen was killed on the tracks at the El Cerrito del Norte station, officials said. El Cerrito High School officials confirmed that he was a junior at the school; grief counselors were made available for students after they became aware of the death.

The death is believed to be a suicide and the incident is still under investigation, said BART spokesman Jim Allison.

Service was halted through the station about 5:17 a.m. and resumed full operation just after 8 a.m., officials said.

During the interruption, riders had access to a limited bus bridge between the Richmond, El Cerrito del Norte, El Cerrito Plaza and North Berkeley stations.

The closure of the station also caused delays in other parts of the system.
