ORINDA -- Highway 24 motorists could face nighttime traffic delays of up to 30 minutes at the Caldecott Tunnel this weekend as Caltrans makes final preparations to open the new fourth bore.
The delays on Highway 24 will occur between 8:30 p.m. Friday and 10:30 a.m. Saturday, and then repeat for as many subsequent nights as it takes to open the tunnel's fourth bore between Orinda and Oakland.
Caltrans says it expects to open the new two-lane fourth bore sometime Saturday, Sunday, or very early Monday morning, but it could take longer if crews are not finished with final testing and preparations.
"Drivers should be prepared for big delays at night and allow extra travel time," said Ivy Morrison, a spokeswoman for the fourth bore project.
The final preparations -- including extensive lane re-striping -- will force crews to limit the three-bore tunnel at night to one bore in each direction.
In another traffic disruption, Caltrans will close the Fish Ranch Road westbound on-ramp to Highway 24 in Orinda for at least a week, starting Friday night.
Caltrans also advises motorists not to be distracted by continuing emergency drills bringing fire and other safety vehicles into or near the fourth bore.
The fourth bore opening also could be delayed if it rains.
