SAN JOSE -- A motorcycle officer was taken to the hospital with serious injuries Friday after colliding with a car north of downtown, according to the San Jose Police Department.
The crash was reported about 11:30 a.m. just south of the intersection of North Fourth and Empire streets, police spokeswoman Sgt. Heather Randol said. A witness said the injured officer, a 13-year police veteran, was initially unresponsive right after the crash before he was placed into an ambulance.
The full extent of injuries to the officer, whose name was not released, was not immediately known. He is expected to survive, police said.
Randol said the man driving the gray hatchback involved in the crash remained on scene and was cooperative with police. No citations or arrests were made, and alcohol or drugs have been ruled out as a factor, according to police.
At the crash site, the hatchback was stopped facing southbound with significant damage to its left front end. The downed motorcycle faced north.
The collision is being handled by traffic investigators, who could be seen at the cordoned-off intersection examining the area.
