HAYWARD -- A car crashed into an empty Hayward middle school Wednesday night, causing broken water pipes and other minor damage, police said Thursday.

The driver, whose name was not immediately available, was arrested on suspicion of drunken driving. He wasn't seriously injured, police said.

The accident happened around 9:45 p.m. Wednesday at Martin Luther King Jr. Middle School on Holly Hill Road, near the Tennyson exit of Interstate 880.

Hayward police Sgt. Mark Ormsby said the school was dark and that no one else was around at the time of the crash.
