OAKLAND -- A man was wounded in a shooting Friday afternoon in the upper Fruitvale district, police said.

The man's name and age were not immediately available. He was wounded his upper body, according to police.

He was conscious and alert when police arrived on the scene. He was taken to Highland Hospital in critical condition.

The shooting happened about 1:30 p.m. in the 2700 block of Fruitvale Avenue, a mostly commercial area.

Police did not have a motive, but said the victim may have known the gunman.

The gunman fled in a car that was last seen going southbound on Fruitvale, police said.
