CAMPBELL - An apparent murder-suicide of an elderly couple in an apartment in Campbell on Saturday was likely based on medical issues involving at least one of the victims, a police spokesman said today.

At about 2:30 p.m. Saturday, police received a call from a member of the couple's family who reported finding the man and woman dead in their apartment at 245 Union Ave. in Campbell, Sgt. Gary Berg said.

The 89-year-old man and 92-year-old woman had both died from bullet wounds, Berg said.

"It appears that it was a murder-suicide with gunshots," Berg said. "We're coordinating with the coroner's office. The autopsies are going on today."

Investigators are waiting for results from the autopsies, but the motive for the incident was probably "based on medical issues," Berg said.

"There were some medical conditions going on," Berg said. "There doesn't appear to be any struggle involved."

A spokeswoman for the Santa Clara County medical examiner's office said today the identities of the man and the woman had not yet been confirmed.
