A couple says Paul Walker secretly bought their engagement ring after overhearing them say they couldn't afford it.

Kyle and Kristen Upham say in 2004 they were shopping for a ring in a Santa Barbara jewelry store when Walker overheard them talking about a gorgeous ring for which they didn't have enough money, according to CBS Los Angeles.

Walker reportedly bought the $9,000 ring for them, then slipped out of the store without a word.

"It's still to this day the most generous thing anyone has ever done for me," Kristen said.

The couple wasn't totally sure it was Walker, though they had chatted with him in the store. This week, after Walker's tragic death in a car wreck in Santa Clarita, the jewelry store clerk confirmed for them that Walker bought their ring.

"To do something like that to a perfect stranger is just unbelievable," said Irene King, the store clerk.

According to Us Weekly, Kyle Upham was preparing for a second tour in Iraq at the time. "When (Walker) found out Kyle just came back from Iraq -- I remember seeing the look in his face," Kristen said. "He kind of transformed."

"When we hand down the ring through the generations, there will always be a story to tell," Kyle said.
