Susan Boyle told Britain's the Guardian newspaper she has Asperger's syndrome.

The 52-year-old former "Britain's Got Talent" star said, "Some articles have said I have brain damage. It's been something else. I have Asperger's."

Asperger's syndrome is considered a high-functioning form of autism, affecting someone's communication skills and social interaction. But Boyle is taking the diagnosis positively, saying it will help people understand her.

"It is a relief," she said. "Asperger's doesn't define me. It's a condition that I have to live with and work through, but I feel more relaxed about myself. People will have a greater understanding of who I am and why I do the things I do."

The singer says she plans on resuming her career, with the help of family and friends.

"I am not strong on my own," she said. "When I have the support of people around me, I am fine."
