GILROY -- A 51-year-old Oakland man died Sunday night after being hit by a Jeep Cherokee on Monterey Road, according to police.

The man, whose name was not released, was in the northbound lane of Monterey Road near Buena Vista Avenue when he was hit at about 7 p.m., according to Gilroy police. Emergency crews who responded tried to provide aid to the man, who died at the scene.

The male driver remained at the scene, according to police. Based on preliminary information, the driver was not under the influence of drugs or alcohol.

Members of the Gilroy Police Department's major accident investigation team responded to the scene and spent several hours interviewing witnesses and gathering evidence in an attempt to determine the cause and contributing factors to the collision, according to Sgt. Pedro Espinoza.

The collision remains under investigation.
