FREMONT -- Suspects posing as menders of a neighbor's fence scammed an elderly resident out of cash and jewelry this week, police said.

A Landon Avenue resident told police that two men knocked on his door between 2-3 p.m. Tuesday, saying they lived in the area and wanted his opinion on a neighbor's fence, spokeswoman Geneva Bosques said.

The homeowner took the men into his backyard, leaving the front door unlocked. The three talked for about 20 minutes and the men then left the victim's home, Bosques said. The next day, the resident discovered cash and jewelry missing from his house, police said.

The suspects, who left in an unknown vehicle, were described as being males age 25 and 30. Both men had average builds, were 5 feet 8 inches to 5 feet 10 inches tall and wore khaki pants.

Police said a second similar "contractor" scam reported last week in the south end of town but that they were unaware of any victims. In that case the men were knocked on doors and told residents that they were doing attic inspections for the city of Fremont.

The incidents come on the heels of similar scams in the Bay Area including one this fall that involved a ruse known as a "snake scam."

Back in September, police in Fremont and Union City reported that a woman dressed as an animal control employee went door to door allegedly looking for a poisonous snake on the loose.

The scheme was among a series of home burglaries in which perpetrators posed as city employees. Other scam artists knocked on doors pretending to be utility workers in Oakland or tree trimmers in Hayward.

Police are asking residents to stay vigilant and not to allow someone they don't know into their home unless they are expecting them.
