HAYWARD -- San Francisco and Fremont-bound BART trains were delayed for a short stint Friday morning because of an electrical malfunction on a San Francisco International Airport-bound train, an agency official said.

It happened about 8:45 a.m. when a passenger reported smelling smoke on the train at the 12th Street Oakland City Center station, said Luna Salaver, a BART spokeswoman.

After passengers got off the train, crews determined an inverter on one of the train cars had malfunctioned and the train was taken out of service.

The problem caused delays of about 15 minutes for trains traveling to Fremont and San Francisco.

Service was fully restored about 9:10 a.m., Salaver said.
