PITTSBURG -- A multicar crash on Highway 4 early Saturday morning injured five people, including a 2-year-old, a California Highway Patrol spokesman said.
The accident occurred on the highway's eastbound lanes around 1:10 a.m., when a speeding vehicle hit another car from behind, pushing it into three other vehicles, authorities said.
Two adults were hurt, including one with major injuries, while the young child suffered minor, non-life-threatening injuries, officer Ron Simmons said. All were transported by ambulance to a hospital.
Officers closed all but one eastbound lane for more than an hour after the accident, while westbound lanes were unaffected. All lanes are now open.
Authorities are investigating the cause of the accident and it is unknown if drugs or alcohol played a role, Simmons said.
