SAN JOSE -- Donors have stepped forward to replace the $5,000 stolen last week from a bingo fundraiser for the Oak Grove High School Marching Band and Color Guard.
Band Director Chris Moura said Wednesday that about $7,000 in contributions have been received or pledged. The funds will go toward operating costs -- instruments, uniforms, local transportation, instructors -- as well as hiring a guard and increasing security at the weekly bingo games.
On Thursday, Eric Hartness, vice-president of Mountain View-based Luckity, an online bingo site, will present the band a check for $5,000. On Wednesday, entrepreneur Wesley Pharr handed band members $500 to match donations.
"We're very humbled by the outpouring of community support," Moura said.
On Wednesday last week, an armed robber stole about $5,000 from the cash box at the bingo game, held in the schools's gym.
The band will perform at a New Year's Eve festival in Frascati, near Rome, then march in the New Year's Day parade. About half the 143 band members will participate in the nine-day Europe trip.
