Two separate shootings at Bay Area malls Friday had holiday shoppers on edge and police scrambling to see if the crimes are linked.

No one was hit in the shootings at the West Valley Mall at 3200 Naglee Road in Tracy or at the Bayfair Center, a mall at 15555 E. 14th St. in San Leandro, police said.

Police have not been available to comment on what led to either shooting or if they appear to be linked.

In San Leandro, police have blocked off the parking lot in front of Old Navy and Bed Bath & Beyond, and are working the crime scene. The mall remains open.

Police in Tracy said officers are searching for a possibly armed person after they received reports of shots fired at the West Valley Mall shortly before 5 p.m. Fox40 television is reporting that employees at a jewelry store in the mall said shots were fired outside their store.

The manager at that DeVons Jewelers said the shots were directed at someone inside the mall after an altercation. One round hit a door and another hit the glass above it, shattering it.

The gunman then reportedly ran off, got in a white Toyota Camry and left the area.

The mall is open for business.
