A spare the air alert has been issued for Monday, according to the Bay Area Air Quality Management District.

Burning wood, fire logs, pellets or other solids in fireplaces and wood stoves is illegal Monday within the air quality district, which includes Alameda, Contra Costa, Marin, Napa, San Francisco, San Mateo, Santa Clara, and parts of Solano and Sonoma counties.

The alert is the 16th of the Winter Spare the Air, a season that began on Nov. 1, and continues through the end of February. Last Wednesday was the end of 11 straight days of spare the air alerts, a record for the air quality district. The previous record was four days.

First-time violators are allowed to take a wood smoke awareness class instead of paying a $100 fine.
