SAN JOSE -- It appears that tips from the public could be vital in solving the death of a 48-year-old man who was hit and killed in San Jose by a car that fled the scene in the early hours of Christmas Eve, the California Highway Patrol said.

The man was walking west across Bascom Avenue near Scott Street about 12:45 a.m. when he was hit by a northbound car, which did not stop, according to a CHP report.

Someone who discovered the man lying in the road called 911, and CHP officers responded because the collision occurred in an unincorporated patch of San Jose. He was taken to nearby Valley Medical Center, where he died a short time later.

The man was not in a crosswalk when he was hit, said Officer Chris Falkowski. No suspect or vehicle description was known.

Anyone with information about the case can contact Officer Gibson at the CHP's San Jose area field office at 408-467-5400.
