SAN JOSE -- The woman who was hit by a VTA light rail train and killed Christmas morning as been identified by the Santa Clara County Coroner's Office as Caprice Crawford, 47, of Santa Clara.

Crawford was wearing dark clothing at 1:30 a.m. when she was hit by a train near the Willow Glen neighborhood, according to police.

Police are treating Crawford's death as an accident, but the incident remains under investigation, according to San Jose police Sgt. Heather Randol.

Emergency responders found Crawford's body after she was hit about 100 to 200 yards from the Curtner light rail station, at Curtner Avenue, just west of the Highway 87 onramp, Randol said.

Crawford was walking on the tracks, and the train was on its way to the rail yard to be "put to bed" for the evening after finishing up its last routes from the previous day. It was not carrying any passengers, officials said.

"She was wearing dark clothing, and the train wasn't able to stop in time," said Colleen Valless, a spokeswoman for the Valley Transportation Authority.

Valless said the train has been impounded at the rail yard while police continue to investigate.
