SAN FRANCISCO -- A young girl is dead and a woman is clinging to life after they were struck by a car on New Year's Eve.

Around 8 p.m., San Francisco police responded to Polk and Ellis streets for an injury collision. Police said a car hit three pedestrians that had been crossing the street.

One adult female and two juveniles were transported to San Francisco General Hospital. One of the children, a girl, later died from her injuries.

The woman was in critical condition late Tuesday and a young boy walking with them was expected to survive. The driver remained on scene after the crash and has been cooperating with investigators, police added.

Drugs or alcohol are not believed to be a factor in the collision.
