OAKLAND -- A human skull was found surrounded by beads and lying on a paper plate Wednesday afternoon along Grizzly Peak Boulevard, police said.

Little is known about the skull, including its age, who it belonged to or where it may have come from.

Police responded to the Grizzly Peak area around 5:40 p.m. after someone called in a tip saying the person had seen the bone.

The Alameda County Coroner was called to the scene to collect the skull, which was found less than half a mile from South Park Drive. Police added they did not believe the skull was of Native American origin, but that the skull did appear to be old.
