One person was killed and five others injured in a two-car accident on Highway 280 south of Page Mill Road early Sunday morning.

Three lanes of southbound Interstate Highway 280 south of Page Mill Road in Santa Clara County near Los Altos Hills have reopened as investigators are at the scene of a fatality this morning, according to the California Highway Patrol.

CHP officers were dispatched to the area on reports of the crash just after 4 a.m.

An overturned vehicle and another vehicle possibly split in half at the center divide was reportedly found at the scene and fire personnel confirmed that one person was dead at the scene, according to the CHP.

Officials said a BMW sedan with four occupants appeared to come into contact with a Nissan sedan with one person inside, the agency said in a news release Sunday morning.

It is unknown what caused the drivers to lose control of their vehicles and collide or if drugs or alcohol were factors in the crash, the release said.

After the BMW and Nissan collided, both vehicles came to rest within the center median. The driver's side of the BMW struck a tree, according to the CHP. The force of the collision split the BMW in half and the driver was thrown out.

The passengers remained within the vehicle. The Nissan overturned and came to rest on its roof partially on top of the concrete center median wall, the release said.

The driver of the Nissan was able to get out of the vehicle. The driver of the Nissan and the passengers of the BMW were transported to Stanford Hospital with moderate and minor injuries.

CHP officials ask that witnesses to the crash contact Officer William Parker at (650) 369-6261.
