UNION CITY -- A man, a woman and her toddler narrowly escaped injury Wednesday night after a suspect fired shots at them during a robbery near Casa Verde Park, police said.

Officers were dispatched at 8:22 p.m to a home on the 3200 block of Santa Susana Way for a report of a robbery and a shooting, police said.

Police learned a man and a woman, who had her 2-year-old son with her, had parked a vehicle in front of a house and were preparing to walk in when an unknown male suspect walked up to them.

The suspect pointed a gun at the victims and demanded undisclosed valuables. But when the male victim attempted to give the suspect cash the suspect fired a round at the victim, narrowly missing him police said.

Meanwhile, the female victim ran into the backyard of the home holding her child, police said. The suspect chased her into the back and then stole valuables from her. He also fired a round at the woman and child, but missed them.

The suspect was last seen running north on Dyer Street from Santa Susana Way.

Police described the suspect as a black man, age 20-30, between 5-foot-7 to 5-foot-10, with a medium build. He wore a dark hooded sweatshirt.
