SUNNYVALE -- A 17-year-old boy was severely injured Thursday morning when he was struck by a vehicle while crossing Lawrence Expressway at the onramp to southbound Highway 101, according to the California Highway Patrol.
The Sunnyvale boy, who has not been named, was walking north on the onramp toward the freeway overpass just after 7 a.m. when he was hit by a 2010 Toyota that was merging onto the highway.
According to CHP spokesman Officer Chris Falkowski, the boy was near the crosswalk but investigators are still looking into whether he was actually between the painted lines. The boy sustained unspecified major injuries and was taken to Regional Medical Center in San Jose.
The 21-year-old Santa Clara man driving the Toyota was not injured and remained at the scene to cooperate with investigators.
Drugs and alcohol do not appear to be factors in the crash, said Falkowski, and no arrests were made.
Anyone who saw the accident is asked to call CHP Officer Menard at 408-467-5400.
