Snowboard star Shaun White advanced Thursday to the slopestyle finals at the U.S. Grand Prix in Breckenridge, Colo., the third of five Olympic qualifying events.

White, who is based at Northstar-at-Tahoe resort, had the eighth best score to reach the final 16. White is trying to compete in the halfpipe and new slopestyle competitions at the Sochi Games. He can clinch his spot in slopestyle by being the top American finisher Friday.

Brandon Davis of Mammoth Lakes also advanced with two solid runs to finish 14th overall.

X-Games snowboard star Jamie Anderson of South Lake Tahoe posted the top score among the women slopestyle riders. She will qualify for Sochi if she finishes as the top American on Friday.

In freeskiing competition, Carmel's Brita Sigourney had the best qualifying mark to lead eight women into the halfpipe finals. Maddie Bowman of South Lake Tahoe was third. If either Californian is the top American on Saturday she will earn an Olympic berth.

Moguls skier K.C. Oakley of Piedmont got her best finish of the season, taking 10th at a freestyle World Cup in Deer Park, Utah. American Hannah Kearney won the event. Oakley is trying to earn one of four U.S. Olympic berths. Sho Kashima of South Lake Tahoe was 14th in the men's moguls, the fifth U.S. skier overall.
