OAKLAND -- A 17-year-old girl was killed early Friday when the car she was driving crashed into a pole at the Port of Oakland, police said.
Kaitlyn Benson of Santa Clara died in the wreck and another 17-year-old girl who was a passenger in the car was badly injured. Police were trying to determine her place of residence.
Both teens were taken to a hospital, where the driver died and the passenger was in critical but stable condition Friday morning.
Sgt. Steve Paich said speed was a factor in the wreck, which happened about 12:06 a.m. in the 500 block of Maritime Street near Seventh Street.
The girls were in a 1992 Honda. Police said the driver apparently was wearing a seat belt and the passenger was not.
Police said the area is a favorite spot for drag racers and investigators are looking into the possibility the girls were participating in the activity.
Paich said when officers arrived on the scene several cars were leaving the area and no witnesses stayed to talk to police.
The investigation is continuing. Anyone with information is asked to call police at 510-777-8540.
