REDWOOD CITY -- A 31-year-old man suspected of abusing and later killing a dog in front of his 4-year-old daughter was arrested Thursday morning by Redwood City police.

Alan Velete, of Redwood City, was booked into San Mateo County Jail on felony charges of animal cruelty and child endangerment after he reportedly abused and then killed a 4-month-old terrier mix belonging to his girlfriend's family, Officer Sean Hart said. Much of the abuse, which began in early December, was allegedly witnessed by the man's young daughter.

A Redwood City police officer responded about 8 a.m. to investigate the apartment in the 300 block of Redwood Avenue where Velete had been staying for the past month with his daughter, his girlfriend and his girlfriend's mother, Hart said. A 911 caller, who was not identified, reported he had been abusing the dog for about a month.

Investigators discovered that the dog had succumbed to Velete's repeated abuse, and had died Jan. 6, said Hart, who added that Velete threw the dog's body in a trash bin. He was found and arrested about 6:30 p.m. in the 2200 block of Middlefield Road.

Anyone with information about Velete or the abuse the dog suffered is encouraged to contact Det. Steve Barker at 650-780-7669. The investigation is ongoing.
