WALNUT CREEK -- Two agencies continue to investigate a fire that killed a 62-year-old man Friday night.

The man was identified as Charles MacDonald, said spokesman Jimmy Lee with the Contra Costa Sheriff's office, which is investigating the fire with the Contra Costa County Fire Protection District.

The fire broke out at 9:38 p.m. Friday at 190 Hilltop Crescent, which is in incorporated Walnut Creek. Lee said the first deputy on scene tried to locate the man, but could not because of flames and heavy smoke in the home.

Firefighters found the man trapped on the second floor of the home. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation, and a damage estimate to the home was not available Saturday afternoon.

Anyone with information about the fire should all the sheriff's investigation unit at 925-313-2600.
