SAN FRANCISCO -- An off-duty police officer shot a person early Sunday morning in the city's Bayview neighborhood during a dispute that occurred after a minor car collision on Interstate 280, police said.

The two cars were involved in the collision at approximately 12:12 a.m. and exited I-280 at Bayshore and Jerrold streets to exchange information, San Francisco police Officer Albie Esparza said. During the exchange, a physical altercation started, and when it escalated, the female officer fired her gun, Esparza said.

Police did not identify the gender or age of the person who was shot but said the bullets grazed the person's lower body and that the injuries were not considered life-threatening.

It was not known immediately what started the altercation or why the officer felt compelled to use her weapon. Esparza said that, per policy, she has been placed on administrative leave while the incident is investigated by the department's Homicide and Internal Affairs divisions.
