WATCH THIS:

  • "American Idol" (8 p.m., Fox): After a contentious season that saw ratings plunge, the singing competition is back with a fresh panel of judges that includes newcomer Harry Connick Jr. and returnee Jennifer Lopez. Also in the mix is Randy Jackson, but as an in-house mentor. First up are audition rounds in Boston and Austin.

  • "Suburgatory" (8:30 p.m., ABC): As the season opens, George and Tessa (Jeremy Sisto, Jane Levy) are both dealing with loss; George and Dallas (Cheryl Hines) have broken up; and Tessa has been abandoned by her mother.

  • "CSI: Crime Scene Investigation" (10 p.m., CBS): Russell (Ted Danson) and the team are called in to investigate when a robbery spree on a plane bound for Las Vegas ends with the murder of a passenger.
