BERKELEY -- A man accused of trying to rob another man of his cell phone was arrested after trying to escape from a confrontation that resulted in the robbery, police said.

Police said 36-year-old Lavar Demark Brown attacked a man who was talking on his phone at the intersection of Bancroft Way and Telegraph Avenue around 9:10 a.m. Wednesday. The male victim was walking toward Brown when he was attacked, police said, and earlier had walked past him during his conversation.

Brown also tried to take items from the victim's pockets, police said, but the victim broke free and ran to Sproul Hall on the UC Berkeley campus and contacted police. A UC police officer detained Brown blocks away from the robbery, and he was positively identified and arrested a short time later, police said.
