SAN FRANCISCO -- A Richmond man and San Jose woman were arrested over the weekend in connection with the 2011 slaying of a medical student inside a San Francisco nightclub.

Dung Minh Nguyen, 36, was arrested Friday on charges of voluntary manslaughter, assault with a deadly weapon and battery causing serious bodily injury in the Jan. 9, 2011, attack that killed 30-year-old Joe Hernandez, authorities said. A second suspect, 25-year-old Tracy Luong, was booked Sunday on the same assault and battery charges, plus an involuntary manslaughter charge for her role in the brawl at the South of Market club.

Hernandez was discovered unconscious on the floor of Temple Nightclub in the 500 block of Howard Street when officers responded to reports of a fight there, authorities said. He was taken to San Francisco General Hospital, where he died two days later after being declared brain-dead.

A surveillance video was released shortly after the attack showing an Asian man with a sleeve tattoo police believed to be Hernandez's killer. While police would not immediately say what led them to Nguyen, they issued a warrant for his arrest and booked him into custody Friday.

Two days later, Luong turned herself in to police after information was released about her alleged role in the attack. The woman, who was reportedly part of a larger group involved in the assault, is accused of hitting a man in the face with her high-heeled shoe as he tried to intervene in the attack.

Hernandez was a fourth-year medical student at UC San Francisco, whose degree was awarded to him posthumously four months after his death. He had been learning Spanish so he could work with refugees in Guadalajara, Mexico, had volunteered as a disaster relief aide in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina and worked as an unpaid hospital volunteer while growing up in San Bernardino County.
