HAYWARD -- A woman in a wheelchair was critically injured Tuesday when she was struck by a van while crossing a busy downtown street, police said.

Officers were called at 3:56 p.m. to the intersection of B and Third streets for a report of a person hit by a vehicle, said Sgt. Mark Ormsby.

The 59-year-old Hayward resident was using a wheelchair to cross Third Street when a 1990s white Dodge conversion van traveling west on B Street struck her in a crosswalk, Ormsby said.

The woman was taken to a hospital to be treated for a broken pelvis, broken ribs and a collapsed lung, police said.

The van's driver was cited for failure to yield to a pedestrian in a crosswalk, police said.

Police said the woman was not dependent on the wheelchair, but was simply using it to cross the street because it was easier for her.

Police said Wednesday that she was expected to survive.
