OAKLAND -- A Newark man who died following a kitchen fire Wednesday night has been identified, said spokesman from the Alameda County Coroner's office.

The man was identified as Perkin Britton, 93, the spokesman said.

Firefighters were called to the blaze in the one-story home in the 36500 block of Darvon Street about 9:40 p.m. and found significant smoke throughout the home, said Alameda County Fire Department spokeswoman Aisha Knowles.

Crews had the fire out in about 10 minutes. Britton, the only resident of the home, was taken to a hospital, where he later died, Knowles said.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation, but Knowles said it was apparently accidental and started in the kitchen. A damage estimate to the home was not immediately available.
