OAKLEY -- An 11-year-old boy died after he accidentally shot himself in a home Wednesday night, according to Oakley police.
The name of the boy was not released Wednesday night.
Police were called to a report of a shooting at home in the 1300 block of Yosemite Circle in Oakley shortly after 7 p.m. Officers found the boy suffering from a gunshot wound. He was pronounced dead on the scene by fire crews and paramedics.
Police said that their preliminary investigation indicated that the child may have accidentally shot himself. Investigators did not say if any adults were home at the time of the incident, or how they believed the child had gotten his hands on the gun. They did not say what type of gun it was.
A large crowd of neighbors and children had gathered on the usually quiet street. Residents said they hadn't heard any gunshots and some said they didn't know a child lived at the home. The boy was loaded into an ambulance, which left the scene with an escort from police.
Neighbors had heard little information about the shooting but expressed sadness for the family.
