Julia Mancuso of Squaw Valley had her best race of the season Thursday, finishing seventh in a World Cup super G in Cortina, Italy, just ahead of the Sochi Games.

Mammoth's Stacey Cook added to the Americans' big day, taking ninth -- her best super G finish since 2007.

Austrian veteran Elisabeth Goergl got her second World Cup of the season. German Maria Hoefl-Riesch was second with Nicole Hosp of Austria third.

With star Lindsey Vonn sidelined because of a knee injury, the Californians are expected to lead the women's speed skiers in Sochi.

"Things are going in the right direction and I know I have a lot more in me," Mancuso said in a statement. "Training has been going really well and racing is getting better, so I'm getting there just in time for the Olympics."

Cook, who grew up in Truckee, credited equipment for her turnaround.

"It's the best stuff I've had on my feet in years," she said. "The plan was to trust everything, my skiing, my inspection, some adjustments from the coaches and then to just attack."

The U.S. alpine Olympic team will be announced Sunday.
