OAKLAND -- A man was fatally struck by a car late Friday night and found on westbound Interstate 980, according to the California Highway Patrol.
Passers-by reported seeing a man down in the far left lane along I-980 near the 27th Street on-ramp around 11 p.m., said CHP Officer Sean Wilkenfeld.
The man, who appeared to be a motorcyclist, was pronounced dead at the scene, according to Wilkenfeld.
The man's identity was not immediately available.
The fatal collision has puzzled the CHP, however, as the man was not found with a motorcycle.
Near the interchange of I-580 and I-980, however, a motorcycle was found without a rider.
Wilkenfeld said it was unclear whether that motorcycle belonged to the man found on I-980, but he said it was odd that both the man and the motorcycle were found by themselves.
No information on what led to the fatal crash was immediately available, but anyone with information on the collision can call 1-800-TELL-CHP (1-800-835-5247).
