REDWOOD CITY -- A San Carlos man pleaded not guilty in Superior Court on Wednesday to fatally beating a man during an argument outside a Belmont bar, prosecutors said.

Joseph Patrick Kaufman, 23, entered the plea on charges he punched a man in the face April 29, 2013, then repeatedly kicked him until he was bloodied on the ground, District Attorney Steve Wagstaffe said. The victim, 48-year-old Barney Hanepen, was found unconscious early that morning in the 800 block of Broadway.

The beating, which took place about 2:15 a.m. outside Lariat Tavern at 1428 El Camino Real, reportedly occurred after a fight over Hanepen's female friend, Wagstaffe said. Hanepen suffered a broken vertebrae, eye orbit fractures and bleeding in the brain after he was kicked in the head and torso. He died in the hospital three days later.

Kaufman faces a jury trial to begin May 19 and will return for a pretrial conference April 8, Wagstaffe said. He remains in custody on no bail status.
