SAN JOSE -- A 19-year-old San Jose man died Thursday night in a two-car crash after being struck by a suspected drunken driver on Highway 85, according to the California Highway Patrol.
The man who died has been identified by the Santa Clara County Coroner's Office as Alex-Jacob Jaramillo of San Jose.
Kylendra Kumar, 27, was arrested on suspicion of felony driving under the influence and booked into jail. Once it reviews the case, the Santa Clara County District Attorney's Office will determine what charges, if any, should be filed.
A preliminary investigation indicates Kumar was driving a black Nissan and rear-ended a Volkswagen driven by Jaramillo, causing both cars to lose control, according to the CHP. At least one vehicle drove up a dirt embankment on the right shoulder and both vehicles overturned causing major damage.
The CHP received a call just before 11:30 p.m. about a rollover collision involving two vehicles on northbound Highway 85 just south of Camden Avenue. When officers arrived, they found the Nissan resting on its wheels on the right shoulder and the Volkswagen on its roof in the two left lanes.
Kumar was given medical treatment on scene and then taken to Valley Medical Center. Once he was cleared, he was taken to Santa Clara County Main Jail.
Jaramillo had to be extricated from the Volkswagen and was also taken to Valley Medical Center, where he died from his injuries.
The collision caused all lanes of northbound 85 to be closed for about 2 1/2 hours.
