BERKELEY -- One person was arrested and another escaped capture after a short freeway chase on eastbound Interstate 580 Friday, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The chase began around 7 p.m. when a car failed to stop at a stop sign near Golf Links Road. Officers tried to pull the driver over, but the car fled, the CHP said.

The driver and a passenger continued from eastbound I-580 to Highway 24, eventually leaving the highway and driving into Berkeley.

The driver eventually stopped the car in South Berkeley and attempted to escape on foot along with a male passenger.

However, CHP officers arrived and were able to detain the driver, who was arrested on a weapons violation.

The male passenger was able to escape, according to the CHP.
