The San Jose fire department on Monday filled two of its highest ranking positions, promoting two veteran supervisors to be deputy fire chiefs who report directly to interim Fire Chief Ruben Torres.

In a memo to Mayor Chuck Reed and city council members, Torres named Johnny Dellinger and Robert Sapien Jr. to be two of the department's three deputy chiefs. Dellinger and Sapien had been battalion chiefs before the promotions.

Sapien has been with the San Jose fire department since 1989, starting as a firefighter and moving up through the ranks. He is a San Jose resident and San Jose State University graduate who is married with three children.

Dellinger has been with the department since 1993, likewise working his way up the ladder to battalion chief. He has been acting deputy fire chief and fire marshal since last August. He is also a San Jose State graduate.
