OAKLAND -- An apparent shootout between the occupants of two vehicles left one man wounded Friday morning in West Oakland, police said.

The shooting occurred at 11:45 a.m. at 12th and Willow streets, police said. It was not immediately clear if the wounded man was involved in the gunbattle or just walking by and hit by a stray bullet.

The victim was brought to a hospital at 12:06 p.m. by a friend and was undergoing surgery Friday afternoon, according to police.

Authorities received reports of a car and a van shooting at each other, but the suspects were gone by the time officers arrived on scene. Shell casings were found in the area, known for gang activity.
