OAKLAND -- Police issued an Amber Alert after a suspect carjacked a four-door sedan from a supermarket parking lot Tuesday afternoon with a teen girl and an elderly man inside, authorities said.

The missing vehicle is described as a burgundy or red, four-door sedan with a California license plate number 6JFM648. Officials at first said the missing car was a sport utility vehicle, but they revised the description about 6:50 p.m. as being a sedan.

About 12:50 p.m. police received a report of a disturbance involving a man with a knife who was reportedly involved in some sort of theft inside the Safeway store at 4100 Redwood Road in the Oakland hills. Police said the man ran into the parking lot, got into the vehicle where an older black man and a black girl about 13 years old were sitting. The car then drove away. It was not known if the suspect threatened the occupants of the vehicle.

The car was last seen traveling southbound on Redwood Road. The store is next to Highway 13 and it was unknown if the car got onto the freeway.

Police are asking anyone who has seen the vehicle to call 911.

Police public information Officer Johnna Watson said the license plate of the car was obtained from witnesses.

She said the large police response, which included dozens of officers, was primarily for "our concern for the safety of the occupants of the vehicle." Police said they have no information the suspect knew the occupants.

The suspect is described as black, in his 40s, tall, weighing about 165 pounds, with salt and pepper hair, and wearing headphones, a green shirt and black pants.
