OAKLAND -- A man was killed after fleeing from police during a traffic stop in East Oakland late Friday night, according to the California Highway Patrol.

Around 9:32 p.m., officers attempted to pull over a driver along San Leandro Street after the plates on the car he was driving came back stolen, according to the CHP. The driver, however, took off and both Oakland police and CHP officers followed.

But at 98th Avenue and San Leandro street, the driver of the suspected stolen car crashed into another car traveling in the opposite direction, as well as a car with a person inside parked along the side of San Leandro Street, according to the CHP.

Both drivers who were struck sustained minor injuries.

The suspect driver was unresponsive as officers attempted to pull him out of the car, which had caught fire shortly after impact.

One officer sustained minor cuts in his efforts to pull the driver from the vehicle.

Paramedics declared the suspect driver dead at the scene.

His identity has not been released.
